Edition 2014

This new Summer Academy was an intercultural learning opportunity for young adults to develop an intercultural perspective and raise awareness for otherness prior to the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. It was corporately organized by InterCultur (non-profit subsidiary of AFS Germany), AFS Brazil, and Universidade Positivo.

In our living and working environment more and more intercultural encounters are taking place. Hence, the ability to effectively communicate and deal with others in intercultural settings became a necessity. This Summer Academy complied with this need, bringing together participants, academic experts and experienced intercultural trainers from all over the world to work together on relevant topics in the field of intercultural management, communication, conflict resolution. The offered courses were: Intercultural Communication, Cross-Cultural Management, and Intercultural Conflict Management.

Due to the interculturalism the Summer Academy was being held in English.

The curriculum was created in cooperation of academic experts and experienced intercultural trainers. It included workshops and seminars on selected intercultural learning compounds, workshops and an attractive leisure program. For people with previous knowledge there were two courses for students who already had some academic knowledge of intercultural topics and one course for students without prior intercultural academic record.

The cultural diversity of the group was another important benefit of the Summer Academy – participants did not only talk about intercultural experience, they lived it and learn it everyday, in and outside the classroom! Furthermore they could network and deepen their intercultural skills.

Program

Participants of the Summer Academy 2014 had the option to choose between four courses focusing on intercultural communication and intercultural management.

The Curriculum was created in cooperation with academic experts and experienced intercultural trainers. It included workshops and seminars on selected intercultural learning compounds.

During the Summer Academy participants could attend courses in either only the first or only the second week as well as in both weeks.

There were courses for students without prior intercultural academic record and one course for studenst who already had some academic knowledge of intercultural topics.

All courses were offered in English.

Courses

The Academy had a duration of two weeks. There were two courses in week 1 and one course in week 2. Each course listed in the course catalog and the complementary workshop sessions  last for one week.

Participants could either enroll in both weeks or in only one week. If you would like to participate for just one week you may choose a class in week one or two.

Students participated 4 times a week in classes (in the morning) and 4 times a week in workshops (in the afternoon).

Please note that the following course program is the one of the Summer Academy in Brazil in 2014.

A new program for the next Summer Academy will follow in time. We will constantly update the website.

First week

Participants could choose between the following two courses:

Intercultural Communication (Prof. M.S. Maurício Benfatti)

This course can be understood as an introduction to the theories of intercultural communication, combined with exercises. The main aspects will be drawn from anthropological and sociological approaches, as well as from cultural psychology. The participants will be given a detailed overview of the current themes and issues in the relevant disciplines. The practices that will accompany the theoretical aspects are designed according to the newest standards in regard to intercultural learning and will include universal as well as culture-specific exercises.

For students without prior intercultural academic record

Cross-Cultural Management (Dr. Susanne Haberstroh)

Global business has shortened distances, explored new markets, and found inspiring new insights in the huge variety of management activities that exist in different cultural environments worldwide. Multi-cultural teams have become everyday reality; cross-cultural networking is part of our ordinary tasks. Taking the cross-cultural aspects of management into account is one of the most promising perspectives of business development. At the same time, we still need more expertise on how to take advantage from cultural diversity.

What is the name of the game in cross-cultural encounters? How can we deal with cultural differences? What do we need to dissolve complex post-merging conflicts? This course introduces into some of the most important questions related to cross-cultural management. In search for answers, we make use of an authentic learning environment in which we enhance the reflection of cross-cultural knowledge and competencies. Therefore, teaching units are combined with cross-cultural awareness trainings and assessments.

For students with prior intercultural academic record

Second week

Participants could choose between the following courses:

Intercultural Conflict Management (Prof. Dr. Ulrich Kühnen)

In intercultural encounters, people are always prone to intercultural misunderstandings. Sometimes, it is just their level of foreign language proficiency that makes them fail in comprehending the message of their interlocutors. But very often, it is the difference in the cultural encoding and decoding of the activities which makes them stumble and fall into the trap of misinterpreting an activity in its worst possible reading. The consequence is an emotional escalation and the risk of a conversational breakdown. The present course introduces basic techniques of identifying the barriers in our self-determination. The first step is to understand our personal attitude in a conflict situation and to be aware of our patterns to behave. This approach helps us to develop tolerance in face of ambiguity and it shows some principle tools of mediation and how it is organized systematically.
